...LIGHT WINTRY MIX EXPECTED ACROSS THE MOUNTAINS TONIGHT INTO
SATURDAY MORNING...
A weakening band of precipitation will move into the mountains of
the Carolinas and northeast Georgia after midnight. The
precipitation will likely start out as a mix of snow, sleet, and
freezing rain, but mostly change over to all snow above 3500 feet,
possibly ending as freezing rain around daybreak. Mostly rain is
expected in the the lower elevations, although areas of freezing
rain are likely in valley locations closer to the continental
divide. With temperatures hovering in the upper 20s to lower 30s,
minor snow accumulations of 1 to 4 inches are expected above
around 3500 feet. Spotty light ice accretions of less than a tenth
of an inch are expected in the valleys and near the Blue Ridge
Escarpment, mainly on elevated surfaces. While widespread travel
difficulties are not anticipated due to warm road temperatures,
some slick spots could develop on bridges and overpasses. Roads
leading into the higher elevations of the Smokies and the Balsams
could become snow covered for a few hours before sunrise. Clearing
skies should allow temperatures to warm above freezing and thaw
out most roads by midday Saturday.
